Incheon Airport Manual, Bonus: Traveling Directly to Other Major Cities

Not everyone's first stop is Seoul. If Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, or another major city is on your itinerary, you've got two real ways to get there straight from Incheon — and one common misconception to clear up first.

The Misconception: There's No Direct KTX From the Airport

Incheon used to have a direct KTX connection, but it was discontinued years ago. If you want the high-speed train, you'll connect through Seoul Station — take AREX in first (see Rule 3), then transfer to a KTX service. It's a well-worn route and not complicated, just don't expect to board a bullet train straight from the terminal.

Option 1: AREX to Seoul Station, Then KTX

This is the fastest way to reach most major cities.

  • Take AREX from the airport to Seoul Station (Express train, ~45 minutes)
  • Transfer to a KTX service to your destination — Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Jeonju, and most other major cities all have direct KTX lines from Seoul Station

Option 2: Direct Limousine Buses From the Airport

Here's what a lot of travelers don't realize — you don't have to go through Seoul at all. Incheon runs direct limousine bus routes straight to major cities nationwide, boarding right at the terminal.

Routes run to destinations including Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Jeonju, and a growing list of others — new routes get added fairly regularly, so it's worth checking current listings rather than assuming your destination isn't covered.

A few things to know:

  • These are first-come, first-seated — no online reservation on most routes
  • Pay by transit card or cash when boarding
  • Trip times are long compared to KTX (several hours depending on destination) since it's a highway bus, not a train
  • Schedules for airport-to-region routes often run at unusual hours — some early morning or late night departures don't match what you'd expect from a normal city bus schedule, so check specific times rather than assuming standard hours
  • Best for: direct city-to-city travel without a transfer, or if your destination isn't well-served by KTX and a direct bus gets you closer to your actual accommodation.

How to Decide

  • Time matters most, transfer is fine → AREX to Seoul Station, then KTX
  • Want to skip Seoul entirely, don't mind a longer ride → direct limousine bus from the airport
  • Visiting multiple cities over the trip → factor in a Korail Pass once you're past the airport leg

Bottom Line

You're not stuck routing everything through Seoul just because that's the airport's biggest connection point. If your destination is a major city, check both the KTX-via-transfer option and the direct bus route before booking — depending on your destination and how much you value time versus convenience, either one can be the better call.
