Incheon Airport Manual, Rule 12: Tax Refund Guide

You already earned this money back when you shopped. Don't lose it to a rushed sprint through the terminal because you left it until the last ten minutes.

Who This Applies To

Foreign travelers who stayed in Korea 6 months or less and made eligible purchases at registered tax-free shops during their trip. If you shopped anywhere with tax-refund signage, this is money you're entitled to — you just have to collect it.

Before You Even Get to the Airport

• Gather every tax-free receipt from your trip in one place — don't try to reconstruct your shopping history at the kiosk
• Check which purchases already got an immediate in-store refund versus which ones still need processing
• Have your passport ready, since it's required to match against your purchases

Where the Kiosks Are

Tax refund kiosks and counters are located in both terminals, generally in the departure area after check-in but before you head to your gate. Signage is usually clear, but if you can't find one, any information desk (Rule 6) can point you there.

The Process, Step by Step

• Locate the kiosk or refund counter in the departure area
• Scan your passport and receipts (kiosks typically scan barcodes on eligible receipts)
• For purchases under a certain threshold, kiosks can often process the refund automatically
• For larger purchases, you may need to show the actual items to a customs officer before the refund is approved — this is why you shouldn't check items you're claiming a refund on before completing this step
• Choose your refund method — cash, card credit, or other options depending on the counter

Timing — Don't Cut This Close

Budget genuine extra time for this, separate from your normal airport buffer. Kiosk lines build up during peak departure hours, and if your refund requires showing physical items to a customs officer, that's an additional step that takes time you don't want to be racing against a boarding call for.

The One Mistake That Ruins This Whole Process

Checking your luggage before claiming your refund, when the refund process requires showing the actual purchased item. If you're not sure whether an item needs to be shown, keep it in your carry-on until you've cleared the refund kiosk.

Bottom Line

This is free money you already qualify for — the only way to lose it is by running out of time or checking a bag before you needed to. Handle it right after check-in, before you start browsing duty-free (Rule 9), not as the very last thing before boarding.
