Incheon Airport Manual, Rule 3: Getting Into the City

Every traveler faces the same decision the moment they clear customs: how do you actually get where you're staying? Get this one wrong and you've blown a chunk of your daily budget before you've unpacked.

AREX — The Default Answer

AREX (Airport Railroad Express) runs from Incheon's underground level directly into Seoul, and for most people it's the right call.

• All-stop train: stops at every station along the line, ₩4,150–9,500 depending on your destination
• Express train: nonstop to Seoul Station in about 45 minutes

If your accommodation is anywhere near an AREX station, this is almost always your fastest, cheapest option.

Airport Bus — When AREX Doesn't Reach You

Buses run from both terminals to dozens of destinations across the city, often dropping you close to your actual hotel or guesthouse door rather than a train station you'd still need to walk or taxi from.

Bus makes more sense than AREX when:

• Your accommodation isn't near an AREX line
• You're traveling with heavy luggage and want to avoid stairs and transfers
• You're headed somewhere outside central Seoul that AREX doesn't reach directly

Taxi — Know When It's Actually Justified

A taxi from Incheon is expensive, and in normal traffic it's not even meaningfully faster than the train. It's not the default choice. It becomes the right choice when:

• It's late at night and trains have stopped running
• You're in a group of 3-4 and splitting the fare undercuts individual train tickets
• You have luggage or cargo that genuinely won't work on public transit

If You're Not Headed to Seoul

Connecting through Seoul Station to a Korail service gets you to most other major cities. Check whether a Korail Pass makes sense for your itinerary before buying single tickets for multiple legs.

Quick Decision Guide

• 🚆 Central Seoul, near a station, budget matters → AREX
• 🚌 Anywhere else in the city, luggage-heavy → Airport bus
• 🚕 Late night, group, or awkward cargo → Taxi
• 🚄 Outside Seoul entirely → AREX/bus to Seoul Station, then Korail

Bottom Line

The taxi line right outside arrivals is designed to look like the easy choice when you're exhausted. It's rarely the smart one. Take five minutes before you land to know which train or bus gets you closest to your door — future you, unpacking with your budget intact, will thank you.
