Not every exchange counter at the airport gives you the same rate, and the difference between the good ones and the bad ones can be significant on a large exchange. Here's how not to lose money before you've even left the building.

The General Rule: Exchange What You Need, Not What You Think You Might Need

Airport exchange counters, everywhere in the world, tend to offer slightly worse rates than banks or city exchange offices. Incheon is more competitive than most airports, but it's still not the best rate you'll find on your trip. Change enough to cover your first day or two — transport, a meal, incidentals — and handle the rest once you're in the city.

Where the Counters Are

Currency exchange counters are located in the arrivals halls of both terminals, generally near the SIM/telecom counters from Rule 4 and before you head toward transit. You'll also find ATMs throughout both terminals if you'd rather withdraw won directly.

ATM Withdrawal — Often the Better Option

Using your home bank card at an airport ATM can actually beat a currency exchange counter, depending on your bank's foreign transaction fees. Check your bank's international withdrawal fee structure before you fly — if it's reasonable, this is often the most convenient and competitively priced way to get cash on arrival.

Korea has prepaid card kiosks (like WOWPASS) at the airport that let you exchange currency directly onto a rechargeable card usable for purchases and transit. Worth considering if you want to avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

What to Watch For

• Compare rates across the available counters if there's more than one — they're not always identical
• Ask about fees upfront, not after the transaction — some counters advertise a rate but tack on a service fee
• Small bills matter — ask for a mix of denominations rather than all large notes, since street vendors and small shops often can't break a large bill

Bottom Line

Exchange a reasonable amount to get through your first day or two, then use city ATMs or exchange offices for the rest — they're usually more competitive than what's at the airport. Don't let jet lag talk you into changing your entire trip's cash budget at the first counter you see.
