Korea User Manual, Rule 3: Incheon Airport to Seoul (AREX vs Bus)

You just landed after 12+ hours in the air. You're tired, disoriented, and there's a taxi line right outside arrivals looking very convenient. Don't do it.

Why the Taxi Is a Trap

A taxi from Incheon into Seoul isn't just expensive — it's expensive and slower than your alternatives in most traffic conditions. You're paying a premium for a service that isn't even faster. That's the worst kind of overspending: paying more for nothing extra.

Option 1: AREX (Airport Railroad Express)

This is the move for most people. AREX runs from Incheon's international terminal, underground level 1, straight into Seoul.

• All-stop train: Stops at every station, costs around ₩4,150–4,750 depending on distance.
• Express train: Nonstop to Seoul Station, takes about 45 minutes, costs ₩11,000.

Either way you're getting into the city in under an hour for a fraction of a taxi fare. If you're headed somewhere outside Seoul, connecting through a Korail ticket from Seoul Station is usually your cheapest onward option.

Option 2: Airport Bus (Limousine Bus)

Buses run from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 directly to dozens of destinations across the city — hotels, neighborhoods, even other provinces — without a transfer. This is the better call if:

• Your accommodation isn't near an AREX station
• You're traveling with heavy luggage and don't want to navigate stairs and transfers
• You'd rather sit and watch the city unfold than stand in a train car

Survival Tip: The T-Money Hack
You can buy bus tickets at the kiosks outside the arrivals hall (usually around ₩17,000), but if you buy a T-Money transit card at the airport convenience store first, you can just tap it on the bus like a local!

When a Taxi Actually Makes Sense

Late at night when trains have stopped running, traveling in a large group where splitting a taxi actually beats per-person train fares, or you're carrying something that genuinely won't fit on public transit. Otherwise, skip it.

• Best for direct-to-door with luggage: Airport bus (~₩17,000)

Bottom Line

The airport-to-city leg is where a lot of travelers blow their first ₩50,000–100,000 without thinking. Don't be that person on day one. AREX or the bus gets you there for less, often faster, and you start the trip with your budget intact.
