Korea User Manual, Rule 11: Flying to Jeju? Skip the Ferry

If Jeju is on your itinerary, the ferry might feel like the scenic, budget-friendly choice. It's usually neither. Domestic budget airlines beat it on both price and time, most of the time.

The Budget Airlines Doing the Route

Korea has a genuinely competitive domestic budget airline market, all flying Jeju routes regularly:

  • Jeju Air
  • Air Busan
  • Jin Air
  • T'way Air
  • Air Seoul
  • Eastar Jet

These carriers compete hard on price, especially against the flag carriers — and the result is fares that can drop as low as ₩18,000 one-way on non-refundable, no-change fares.

Survival Tip: Go to the Right Airport!
Do NOT go to Incheon International Airport (ICN) for your flight to Jeju! Almost all domestic flights from Seoul to Jeju depart from Gimpo International Airport (GMP). If you show up at Incheon, you will miss your flight. Always double-check your airport code.

Why Flying Beats the Ferry Here

  • Time: Roughly an hour in the air versus several hours by sea.
  • Price: Budget carrier fares are frequently competitive with, or cheaper than, ferry tickets once you account for the time saved.
  • Frequency: Multiple daily departures from Seoul and other major cities, so you're not locked into one or two sailing times a day.

The Catch With Budget Fares

Those rock-bottom fares (₩18,000 range) are almost always non-refundable and non-changeable. That's the tradeoff for the price. Lock in your dates before booking — if there's any chance your plans shift, budget a little more for a flexible fare instead of chasing the absolute lowest number.

When the Ferry Still Makes Sense

  • You're bringing a vehicle over.
  • You're departing from a smaller southern port where flights aren't practical.
  • You genuinely want the slower, scenic approach as part of the trip itself.

How to Book Smart

Compare fares across all six budget carriers rather than defaulting to one — prices swing a lot route to route and week to week. Book early for the cheapest non-refundable fares, and treat the booking as locked in once you do.

Bottom Line

Unless you have a specific reason to take the ferry, flying to Jeju wins on both time and money. Six airlines are fighting for your business on this route — let them.
