Korea User Manual, Rule 13: File Your Tax Refund Before You Fly Home

This is the last rule in the series, and it's the one people forget most often — usually because it happens right at the end of the trip, when everyone's already mentally checked out and thinking about the flight home.

Don't skip it. It's free money you already earned by shopping.

Who Qualifies & The Requirements

Foreign travelers staying in Korea for 6 months or less are eligible for a refund (up to ~10%) on eligible purchases.

  • Minimum: ₩30,000 spent in a single transaction (Note: Korea recently lowered this to ₩15,000, making it even easier!)
  • Maximum: ₩500,000 per transaction for immediate refunds (up to ₩1,000,000 under new rules)
  • Purchase must be made at a registered tax-free/duty-free shop — look for the "Tax Free" logo at checkout.

How to Actually Claim It

You've got two real paths:

  1. Immediate refund at the store

    Some tax-free shops will process your refund right at checkout, on the spot (you just pay the discounted price). This is the simplest option — no extra steps later. Always have your physical passport ready when shopping!

  2. Refund at the airport

    If you didn't get an immediate refund, you can claim it before you fly out via kiosks or refund counters at major airports. Budget extra time for this — don't leave it until you're sprinting for your gate.

Survival Tip: DO NOT Check Your Bags Yet!
If you are claiming a tax refund at the airport, do not put the purchased items inside your checked luggage until customs clears your receipts. Customs officials have the right to ask you to show the physical items. If you've already sent your bags to the airplane, they can deny your refund!

The One Rule That Actually Matters: Keep Your Receipts

Every single purchase you want refunded needs its receipt. No receipt, no refund — full stop. This is the part people mess up, because receipts get shoved in bags and forgotten by day 5 of the trip.

Practical fix: Dedicate one pocket of your bag, or one envelope, specifically for tax-free receipts starting from your very first purchase. Don't try to reconstruct your shopping history from memory at the airport.

Quick Checklist Before You Fly Home

  • ✅ All tax-free receipts collected in one place
  • ✅ Confirmed whether each purchase already got an in-store refund
  • ✅ Extra time budgeted at the airport for kiosk/counter refunds
  • ✅ Passport ready — you'll need it to process the refund
  • ✅ Purchased items kept on hand (not checked in yet) just in case

Bottom Line

You already earned this money back the moment you made an eligible purchase — the only thing standing between you and getting it is keeping a receipt and using ten minutes at the airport. Don't leave 10% on the table because you were in a hurry to board.
